In these down economic times many of us are looking for new ways to make money to pay the bills. Whether you have lost your job because of a company having to lay off workers to keep afloat, or just aren’t making enough to cut it and need a second job, a job selling used items may be the way to go.

Reselling used items is a good venture for a number of reasons. First, your outlay of capital is not as high as it would be for a new retail business as the items you will be selling will not cost as much per piece. Second, many people are going through what you are, having to cut back on spending. While they still need things, they are going to look for the best deal, which is often in the used items market.

Where to Start A Business

Most people who start a used item business start small – either online through a website like eBay or at a flea market with a table to test the waters. If things go well, you may want to expand to start your own website or even open a bricks and mortar store.

Where the Find Great Used Items

There are a few sources you can choose for your used items to sell. The first is to start small. You may want to go to a few garage sales or thrift stores and see if you can find a few items to begin your business with.

Once you see that you have chosen items that people like, you need more inventory. While you could spend every waking hour driving from one garage sale or thrift store to the next, it is much easier to get a lot of items at once.  This can be accomplished by finding a liquidation source.

Liquidation items are those that had been at a store or in a company warehouse and are now being sold in bulk. Some of these items may have been pulled from the shelves because they had some dents and dings or a broken box. Others may have been purchased and returned for any reason, but can no longer be sold as new since they were used for a short period of time.

Instead of letting these sit around, liquidation sellers move them by the pallet meaning you are going to get a lot of items for possibly pennies on the dollar.

Being able to buy items this cheap will give you a lot of inventory for a low initial cost meaning you can pass on your savings to customers and be the one they come to for great items at a low price.
