So, do you really know what your car insurance policy covers? What if there was a flood? Would you be covered? A lot of people just assume that everything that could go wrong on their car is covered. You know it covers theft, accidents, why wouldn't it cover something else that could go wrong, like flooding?

The truth of the matter is that while you think your car insurance should cover such things, it may not.

Don't think you're at a threat of dealing with flooding for your car? Think again. Flooding comes in a number of forms.

Water Main

While a lot of people think a water main break is just an inconvenience in your house, if your car is parked on the low end of the street, this could be a problem for your car too. Depending on the size of the water main break, enough water could pour down the road that it is able to flood into your engine and cause damage to the vehicle

River Flooding

If you live anywhere near a river, not just beside it, you know the threat of river flooding. All it takes is one violent and unexpected storm to quickly see the river rise and start to take over the land, including any cars that are parked in the path of the rising tide.

Flash Floods

There have been a lot of rogue storms in the past few years across the country that drop massive amounts of rain at once. As these rains start to saturate an area, they move, all heading towards the lowest ground in town. If your home is that ground, you could easily find your car under water.

Tropical Systems

More and more tropical systems seem to be finding their way to shore across the country. From the storm surge that puts lakesides and beach areas underwater to massive rains that fall from the storm, there are plenty of ways to see major flooding from one of these systems.

The sad part about flooding is that many people think they have car insurance that will cover any damage to their car, and don’t find out that they are not covered until it's too late. It's estimated that about 30 percent of people who think they are covered for eventualities, like flooding, do not actually have that coverage for their vehicle.

It's best to look over your auto insurance policy now so you know that you are covered, just in case.
